Unfortunately Indians (and i don't refer to Indian nationals only) are generally resistant to change. With the Montfort Brothers leaving and a new management taking over RSK, I believe that RSK can continue to progress. In the final analysis, it's the people who make it or break it. No organisation can grow bigger than the minds of the people who run it. Let's give the new management a chance to take RSK to higher grounds. I left RSK in 1986 and have been back in Malaysia since then. What has kept me going is the quality of wholesome education I received in RSK and I'm sure thousands more would vouch for that thought.
If we love our alma mater, we should allow anything and everything that would take her higher, and I believe new blood would inject that much needed zest into it.

Start a trust based out of Chennai/Trichy.(preferably chennai) We have approx 3,500 alumni.@ Rs.1000 per alumni we will straight away have a corpus fund of about Rs.35 lakhs to start with. This would build over the years as every year atleast 150 students pass out. Now, out of this 35 lakhs initially,we would get atleast 3 lakhs as interest annually. We can start a pension fund for both the retired teachers and also alumni who cross 58 years of age. Why can't we have a pension fund for the alumni also? With 3 lakhs per annum and with 20 retired teachers and atleast 10 retired alumni, each person is likely to get Rs.10,000 per annum (to start with) and this would go up every year as the corpus builds up. The corpus will definitely go beyond this as those living abroad will donate more than Rs.1000 and we can even invite corporate donations, esp from BHEL. can we have someone thinking on these lines pls. (a major request- let us not rubbish anyone's ideas if we do not agree with them but let us try and make our minds a bit constructive) stalwarts like T.Valliappan of 1983 batch can take up the initiative of this corpus idea, which by god's grace can be implemented....... Hi All Name: Mariannan (bromariannan(at)yahoo.com) Date: Fri 20 Jan 2006 09:31:10 AM EST Subject: Brother Provincial's Circular to Parents and the well wishers
Dear Old students it is heartening to read through your concern and solidarity with us brothers at this moment of transition.
January 16, 2006
We, Brothers had no intention of giving a detailed account of the happenings and developments that eventually forced us to serve notice to BHEL management but unfortunately the company has come out to the public with a circular regarding why we Brothers are leaving the school conveniently presenting only the partial truth and concealing the vital points. Hence, we are forced to give to you our parents and well wishers the correct picture of what led us to leave the School, which we held, so close to our heart for the last forty two years.
First of all I would like to tell you that we are not leaving RSK just because we are planning another school. Building schools and providing quality education is our mission and the proposed new school is just our routine expansion of our mission. One may ask why in Kattur? Well, the answer is simple. It is at the repeated requests of the public and the need of the locality. If building a school in Kattur were our aim to leave RSK, we would not have renewed our contract with the BHEL management for another 10 years in 2004. I cannot understand the unfounded fear of BHEL that it would result in a conflict of interest for the school management when the company is having number of schools by different managements in the same campus!
1. As we all know, RSK is a forty two years old institution. It needs a lot of maintenance for the sake of the safety of the students, which is much insisted by the education department after the Kumbakonam tragedy. Even after bringing these to the notice of the company, nothing much is done. 2. The growing negative attitude of BHEL management towards the welfare measures such as Medical facility, House tariff etc. of the teaching community, which gives its life for the well being of the students was brought to the attention of the authorities concerned along with the PTA of the school but of no use. 3. The due monthly subsidy to the school by BHEL is quite often delayed or carried over to the following months, which places the Principal into unnecessary tension and hinders from concentrating his time and energy on important aspects of the students educational needs. 4. Unfortunately the integrity of the Montfort Brothers was questioned by the Executive Director on 19-09-2005 during his meeting with the principal. When the sanctioned subsidy for the year was not released in full, the Principal approached the ED to sort it out that day. He in turn said that already RSK is well fed and a lot of money is dumped in RSK. He went on to blame the Brothers of being non-transparent, money minded and cheating comparing the brothers to the vegetable vendors! 5. He asked about the school we are planning to start at Kattur. Principal told that it was a routine expansion of our mission in TN. For this the ED stated, "You start the school in Kanyakumari, why in Kattur?" For this he was told by the principal that the Brothers need not get the permission from BHEL where and how to start a school. It is far from truth that anything regarding computer education or the school bus was talked in the meeting of the Principal with the ED on 19th September 2005. 6. Having listened to the humiliating experience of the Principal with the ED on 19-09-2005, I sent a letter on 22-09-2005 to ED expressing our shock and dismay at the baseless allegations made against us, questioning our very integrity by the ED in the presence of GM-HR and AGM-HR. In my letter to him I reminded 'how he as a parent of the school a couple of years ago and as an officer acknowledged and spoke high and appreciated the brothers' service and commitment on various occasions and now going to the extent of labeling the brothers as non-transparent and cheats'. I got on 13-10-2005 an embarrassing reply of denial of facts from DGM-HR who was not even present in the meeting. 7. As per the decision of my council, I as the Chairman of Montfort Brothers - Trichy Province, had requested for an appointment with the ED through my letter dated 09-11-2005 to clarify face to face the issues raised. I had suggested the date 15-24 of November. As there was no reply from the ED office I sent a reminder on 5-12-2005 asking for an appointment between 8-12 December since I was to go to Rome on 14th December 2005. In reply to my letter I received a letter from GM-HR dated 7th December (along with a copy of a letter dt.14-11-2005 from ED) stating that ED had replied to my letter of 09-11-2005 expressing his inability to meet me due to other engagements. The so called letter of ED dated 14-11-05 has not reached me till this date surprisingly. 8. I was quick to answer and give my views through my letter dated 9th December 05 on three issues raised by the BHEL. Here is what I stated: " RSK school has not purchased any land anywhere. The School annual audited statements and budgets submitted every year give the details on financial matters concerning RSK HSS and the rate of computer fees collected class wise was given in my letter" 9. And now about the income from School stationary, Bus and computer education have been explained to the BHEL management by the former principals through letters to their satisfaction. These items have been managed and financed by the Brothers right from the inception of RSK School at the request of the officials of those days. At no point of time (even when we renewed our contract in march 2004) we were told to include these items in the school account system since it was purely by the Brothers fund and at their supervision. Knowing with deep grief the humiliation meted out to us, that our integrity, and honour is suspected and having got no date for dialogue with the ED after waiting patiently till 13th December 05, my council decided the painful decision to give the notice for termination of contract with the BHEL and handover the school management from the coming academic year. This is the fact on which our decision rests and nothing else. We have happily served the institution for forty-two years amidst many hardships with the unstinted support of our teachers. We are proud of our contribution to the Nation, to BHEL and to a large group of students. We are contended with the way our old students have discovered their lives and our worth. They are and will always be our beacons carrying the torch of greatness and remain grateful for the Montfortian way of education they received. Our motive was not profit and gain. Unfortunately our integrity and honour is questioned. This should not have been done to us. Anyhow, we go with the realization that some in this world sometimes may not reciprocate in the same measure as you give. Yours brotherly,
Name: R K Sen (senrk(at)sify.com) Date: Thu 12 Jan 2006 11:29:36 PM EST Subject: Sudden move by the Montfort Brothers Yes, the happenings at RSK are indeed sad. Mr. Ramanan has talked about aspersions cast by the current ED of BHEL Trichy on the brothers, but we do not have complete information (from either side). Allegations of financial irregularities have been levelled for the last ten years. Even today, computer fees (Rs.400), arbitrary group fines (ranging from Rs.25 to Rs.100), earthquake relief, and many similar amounts are collected without any documentation of any kind. I know that this will also be shocking to all of you, but it is true. The brothers have decided to leave RSK with this academic year. What is also to be known is that they have opened a new primary school in Kattur, and this is a major factor in their decision. Teachers, including senior teachers, have told the students that they would be leaving along with the Brothers. Whatever be the validity and justification for this move, what is shocking is that they have not taken either the students or the parents into their confidence, despite the availability of various forums like the Parents Teachers Association. Astoundingly, no formal communication has been made as yet. Especially bewildered are the students who will step into the tenth and twelfth standards. They are suddenly left to fend for themselves at this crucial point in their academic path. Even if alternative arrangements are made by the BHEL management, the trauma of new teachers, new methods, new management, is bound to wreak untold havoc to those preparing for the final examinations a year away. Especially pathetic will be the lot of the CBSE students, who face a change of board in their final year, since there is no alternative CBSE school in the near vicinity. Those who have built up such an enviable reputation in education should preserve it by deferring their movement by a year, so that parents get an opportunity to explore their options and choose what is best for the students. Maybe those OSA members who have influence can prevail over the Brothers to think about the plight of the students. Please circulate this in other OSA forums. And as a boarder I had spent more quality time with the brothers who ran both the school and the boarding. I consider the time that I spent in this great institution has moulded me into a well rounded personality. This transformation would not have materialized without the efforts of the brothers and it was their guidance that had made me to rediscover my potentials, and stand tall in facing world. Like me there are tens and thousand of them who had graduated from this institution are now serving the world with pride and confidence. Why now after all these years of parenting this institution with dedication and sacrifice, these brothers be called off. I did visit India and the school in oct 2003, and I felt the same amount of dedication by the brothers as my time. Many would agree with me that they are unsung heros. Truly in our hearts of heart we know what we have gained from these brother and to understand these experience one should have been a student at RSK. No outsider can feel the same degree compassion as we are all do. No final verdict of discharging these brothers should ever be brought without consulting the students of RSK. They know better what is best for their future and who can care for them the most. Year after year I see cases where people die due to head injury. As a neurosurgeon I would strongly recommend the bikers (Two Wheelers) to wear helmet. Helmets reduce the impact of blows during road accidents and over 90 percent of lives were saved in the past mainly because the bikers were wearing helmets. Doctors aren't God, we cannot recreate the whole new brain if the parts of the brain is seriously damaged and some may become vegetative due to permanent loss of memory. There are chances that one may become paralysed. Brain is the vital part of the human body and it is the brain that commands and control the actions that we do. Helmet wearing should be made mandatory. New legislation has be enacted so that no bikers can ride without wearing a helmet. When we can buy a bike for 40,000 rupees, it will not hurt us to spend another 600 to 1000 rupees for our helmets. India is one of the very few countries in the world that has no laws to enforce its bikers to wear helmet. Somethings in life cannot take chances and we have to play the game by its rules. Name: Sivamani Muru (c_vaa007(at)yahoo.com) Date: Fri 29 Jul 2005 01:51:57 AM EDT Subject: Think BIG. It's time that all of us think big. If we aim for a hundred we might end up in ninety plus marks in our exams and if we just aim for a pass mark there are chances that we may fail painfully. To aim big we have to think big, so thinking big is not just confined to exams alone. Couple of months back there was a chatting session on the internet and the topic of discussion was whether to build a world class international airport for chennai. Many foreigners too took part in this chatting and they did emphasis the need for a world class airport and also wrote down a list of things at our present airport that we have to improve. The first thing they commented was about the toilet which was often found dirty, the second thing was about the narrow conveyor belt at the baggage collection area which bruised and damaged bags and the third thing was about the airport taxi that ferried air passengers to the city, and commented here about small baggage trunk that can hardly fit a 29 inch bag and the faulty taxi doors for some taxis. Soon the chatting session was turned into a battlefield. Our own people started to use the four lettered swearing words at these foreigners. I was totally disappointed at this act because these foreigners were not putting us down but instead they were trying to give us clues on how to improve our airport. I took that as a constructive criticism, and a need to improve our system. I wrote in trying to cool some of our own chatters and told them not react emotionally but act to rationally. Many of these angry chatters turned against me. One even asked me if education, poverty and airport is on the list what would I choose?. I told them that I do not differ in my opinion with them in giving priority to poverty and education and at the same time in order to eradicate poverty and to provide education to all where is the government going to get their fund. Through taxes right. I told them that the aviation industry is not a non profit making organisation. It's a billion dollar industry. Tiny island nation like Singapore is making millions of dollars through their airports by ever increasing influx of tourists. A journey begins and ends in the airport, and if a journey into a nation is a smooth transistion, it will bring in more and more tourist. India unlike many of its neighbours have a lot to offer in tourism and we have not even tapped a quarter of our potentials. Inorder to do a business one needs capital, premises(Building) and goods. I told them that I see the airport as premises from where we do business, tourism is our goods, the capital is the money we are initially going to spend on improving our facilities. One even told me that he was not interested in foreign dollars coming into the country and he said india's businesses too pay tax. I wrote in to tell this guy that collecting revenues by merely taxing our own people is liking fishing in our pond but by receiving revenues from tourist coming from abroad is liking fishing in the ocean, we have surplus fund in there. If we have 5 ruppees and 5 people to share, we'll only have 1 rupee each to go around and if another 5 rupees is given to us by external source then each person will be richer by 2 rupees. Isn't that not true. I really do not understand why we at times fail to see the bigger picture. It is time that every indian thinks big. Abdul Kalam in his statement to the Indian people have asked them to explore beyond this planet, which simply means be futuristic and think big. Year after year I see large number of students enroll themselves for information technology related studies. I.T is one popular studies they know of. I have nothing against I.T. It still has potentially for a decent living but at the same time there are other courses which has high end job demands and can fetch as much as an I.T professional or even more. One such studies is Architecture. The whole world is up on the Infrastructure race and India is no exception. We need more Condos, hypermarkets, shopping plazas, public buildings, state of art offices and airports. An architect earns anything from 8 to 10% of the total cost of constructing a building. Gone are days where people settle easily for a matchbox (squarish) shaped buildings. People are now more into form (shapes) and function (space Utility). It's the architects who can design a building that can speak for itself. If you are a person who has flair for both science and arts, then architecture is for you. India is expanding and infrastructure is the key to induce such expansion and architects have bigger role to play. May it be studying for an exam or participating in an atheletic event, we choose to burn the midnight oil rather than working towards it progressively and consistently. How many of us have gone back home each day after class and studied extensively on all subjects taught that day in school on examination footing. How many of us have prepared well ahead for the next chapter to drown your teachers with questions. In the western world the teachers are the ones who are hard chased by smart students and they have to work doubly hard to provide facts of new developments on that related field of studies to stand ahead of students. There is no black cat crossing the road omen to stop you from taking your strides there. Some good qualities are worth learning to become a progressive nation. India is officially holding the Commonwealth Games for the year 2010. We are little over the mid year 2005 and we just have four and a half years to complete our stadiums, build hotels for foreign delegates and guests for the game, and to improve on our roads and inter city railway system and to landscape and beautify the whole sports city. The bitter truth is we have not even started on our ground works yet. The blue prints are still sitting on our drawing board to be completed. Tenders are yet to be called and prosposals are yet to be finalised. This commonwealth games is no local event, the whole world is going to turn to India, either through personal visits for the game or through their television sets from their home country. Participants from over hundred countries are going to pour in for the event. Not only will they be here to tour around our sports city but they'll also measure our capabilities and our organising abilities by the way we carry ourselves. If we did well, every Indian on this globe will be hounoured and India will be well documented for the world to see. We have to train our own children first, and then our own Indian youths to work around the clock and to appreciate the importance of working consistently and effectively. Children who are raised by these standards will not put things off for tomorrow and they'll begin work right away. India is in need of such leaders and let that begin from RSK. Love Sivamani Muru. Whilst I was a student at RSK there were many venues that gave first hand experience in volunteering for a social service. We visited home for the aged and even cleared grass for road at Manal Maydu way back in late seventies. Not only were we given the sense of empathy for others but also a firm platform for survival. I presume that RSK is still proactive in lending its hands to most unfortunate folks of our society. If it does then I have few suggestions that may be worth considering. 1) Counselling for those left at the house of the aged: These lonely hearts needs real persons to talk to, why not that be you. Apart from showing the positive side to life; take with you some used clothings that may be of great use to them. 2) Adopt a slum and teach the children to read and write: This can be done every saturday as a part of extra curricular activities. 3) Planting of trees: Collect money and buy tree samples from the nursery and plant trees along the village roads. Tell each child there that every child gets a tree to take care. Tell them that they own a tree and they should feed and water them to grow. This infact teaches them to be civic conscious. I hope being a part of the community enables us to grow and branch out in the main stream society. What we learned at school takes us all our lives. True education isn't just mugging word to word of the text and spilling them over the examination paper. Truly speaking, we do not want others to judge our intellect based merely on three hours of doing the exam. Can one become a true genius, if just few chapters he or she studied becomes the question paper of the day or can one be labelled as less genius if he or she have studied nearly all chapters and left out only few chapters that becomes the question paper. The truth is one had a lucky day and the other didn't. But unfortunately exam is the popular mode of testing intelligents. Most civilized world has now recognised assignments, presentations and experiments along side the written examination to judge a candidate. Discipline is crucial in every part of our work. At the same time to become arguementative in our learning process does not neccessarily mean that we are less disciplined or becoming oversmart. Newton said in his theory that it is the force of gravity that is pulling down the apple that snaps from the tree branch. An arguementative learning will prompt the mind to think of the possibility if an upper force is pushing the apple down instead. Research begins on it and new findings can be born on the way. Learning is not merely accepting what others have given us to see but what more we can see. When Radio first became the communication media tool of the humankind, it was not perceived as an end communication tool. Someone went beyond to add visuals to sounds we hear and television was born. Today we can have the virtual experience of travelling in a roller coaster with a actor by watching movies on IMAX (ImageMax) screen. Tomorrow, who knows someone may add the smell element to the already existing sight and sound invention. We may be able smell Jasmine flowers in our living room whilst watch a girl wearing that flower through our own television set. When we read a book we should read between lines, truly to see how, when, and where it can be applied in our day today's life. How much further can we improve on what others have already given us. Such hands on experimentations shouldn't be pushed until we become a research scholar. It should be practiced right through the school days so that this habit of ours will bring new inventions to India when we set ourself to excel in our near future. Both highways and expressways are six laned chanelling traffics to their end destination as quickly and smoothly as possible. Single land owners have joined hands with adjacent land owners and brought their individual lands together to make collective land masses. They built mega sized shopping malls and plazas on these land masses and shared their rental returns accordingly. Furthermore, it is easier to win bank loans if land size is big and the project to be undertaken is to make definite monetary returns. Inorder to bring the lands together under a common boundary, there should be consensus mind over matter, and the ability to stand together. To my dismay such an ability to stand together in India is not par with the chinese counterparts at this given time. This does not mean that Indians cannot achieve it and it is only possible if we trust another and come out of our comfort ring. Comfort ring is something that we are traditional pleased with, without having to take risk. The reality is that there is no life without taking risk. If we are afraid to breathe we will cease to exist. Sizeable amount of our export earnings are from software and where do we stand in our hardware sales. China is world's exporter of manufactured goods for the first world. More than 60% of its goods are been bought by America and Canada alone. Where do India stand in export-oriented manufacturing?. If Indians do not follow the Chinese model, we'll be left far behind in the race to lead the world. I write this article, so that every student from RSK can sleep over these thoughts and grow up to take new challenges when out into the job market, to become dynamic and innovative leaders unlike their forefathers. The monotonousness of our modern life style shouldn't make us machine like. We have to take time off to admire nature, and to understand the simple basic attributes, such as love and affection and above all to be grateful to all those who had moulded us into success people. Certainly the teachers of RSK play an important role. My opinion does not differ from that of Samuel das. Please visit your teachers while you visit Trichy and without them we certainly would not have come thus far.
